Kruszyna is a species of shrub belonging to the buckthorn family. It can be found all over Poland - it is a typical plant for areas under the influence of a warm and cool transitional climate throughout the northern hemisphere. It occurs in the undergrowth of various forest communities, from dry coniferous forests, through various mixed and deciduous forests, to swamp alders. It also grows in bogs and wet meadows, preferring moist and acidic places. It tolerates shading well. The bush bears small, spherical fruits that are poisonous to humans (they cause severe diarrhea and vomiting), although harmless and eagerly eaten by birds. Only the bark of the plant is used in herbal medicine.
RAW MATERIAL: buckthorn bark (cortex frangulae)
It contains anthracompounds, in particular: franguloemodin biosides and their monosides. Fissionion, chrysophanol and emodin glycosides are present in smaller amounts, and flavonoid compounds, saponins and peptide alkaloids in trace amounts.
ACTION
Buckthorn bark is characterized by a strong laxative effect. It stimulates intestinal peristalsis (especially in the large intestine), thins the stool masses and facilitates defecation. It is sometimes used in diseases of the bile ducts and liver. However, it is not recommended to use more than 2-3 times a week and for a period longer than 1-2 weeks due to the risk of the body getting used to the active substances. Buckthorn bark must not be consumed by pregnant women due to the risk of pelvic congestion and miscarriage.

Long-term use of laxatives may lead to habituation, the need to increase the dose, intestinal atony and worsening constipation. It can also cause congestion in the colon and pelvic organs. A possible side effect is the excessive loss of potassium and other electrolytes. Chronic use of buckthorn bark with digitalis glycosides may intensify their effects.
